Womxn-Centered
on the topic of core values
Supporting womxn led, womxn owned is one of our core values. So why the x?
Replacing with the x means including trans womxn, womxn of color, and nonbinary folx.
We use the ‘x’ because it creates a space for women and femme folks that aren’t cis women. Meaning it tells people that ALL women-identifying people are welcome at Gumption Collective.
So why the x?
A dear friend of mine has often felt alienated, especially by “elite white feminists.” So when she publicly transitioned last year I asked her. How important is the X to you? And she replied—
it honors all of me.
Some might see the use of the X as just another white chick being trendy. You might be thinking — "They seem to have used womxn as a fix-all." For Gumption, this is the only way— A space for all of us.
As a cis-white woman I realize how using the “womxn” in my business may be perceived. Performative comes to mind. Faking one’s true intention for the sake of appearances.
The use of the this word is not a fix-all, or a suggestion that automatically makes Gumption inclusive. Being inclusive means putting in the work to create a space that really is inclusive. The same way brands are finally acknowledging Black Lives Matter. Believe them when you see the changes in their organizations through the next 12 months, 12 years. This goes for Gumption too. We must be accountable for what we’re creating, who we’re creating with, and how we continue to put our core values into practice.
