Wordpress or Squarespace?
THE QUESTION I GET ASKED THE MOST IS “WHAT'S THE BEST X?”
What's the best email marketing system? What’s the best website platform?
There's no one right answer for everyone. What suits a full-time online marketer with a team behind them isn't the same as what suits a small solo business with limited time to do their marketing in. And personal preferences play a role too.
Here’s a quick list of the reasons I would choose to use Squarespace or Wordpress for a client.
SQUARESPACE is my go-to website platform for the avg. solopreneuer (and trust me, I've used them all!). You can quickly build out or update a page without having to learn code and if you want to get really fancy, you can hire me to add custom code! It's a beautiful, easy to use, drag and drop platform that this site is built on! You can use their templates, buy one, or go custom. They also released Members Areas, so you have the option of building out a membership platform without the need for another software.
BONUS: I’m a Squarespace Circle Member and web-clients who work with me can get 20% discount on your new site’s annual subscription.
Wordpress
If you want a well integrated membership site, Wordpress is always my top pick. The learning curve for coding and updating your website is higher than Squarespace. But it’s totally worth it! There's a huge range of marketing tools that work easily with WordPress. If you go this route, you will need to purchase a Theme (aka your template). CREATIVE MARKET, ThemeForest, and ThriveThemes all have templates for purchase.
controlling your site’s functionality
Thanks to its massive library of third-party plugins and themes, WordPress may seem the clear winner when it comes to depth of control and functionality. WordPress has tens of thousands of plugins that add functionality, whereas, with Squarespace, you’re more limited to the small set of integrations that Squarespace supports. Now, this is changing, especially with the use of Zapier, so I’m still pro Squarespace for many reasons.
I’m all about making sure you know your options and choose the best platform to suits your needs. There are obviously more than these two, but these are the ones I use the most frequently, and feel best about recommending — especially for movement professionals. Thinking of building a membership site? That’s a whole other process and I’d be happy to chat with you and suggest some platforms. If your primary business is selling merch, Shopify or BigCommerce are worth a peek. If you’re looking for Online Course rec’s — I discuss that below.
