The most common question I’ve gotten the past few weeks is what to use to teaching online. I gotchu, but before buying anything new or shiny, I want you to take a look at what you already have lying around.
Here’s a quick list of the top three tools you actually need:
Hardware to record on: Tablet / Laptop / Phone
Decent Audio (I went out on a limb and bought the BeatsPros and for their price point really love them. And that means something as an audiophile.
Tripod / Place to record that’s stable
Now that you know, take a moment and ask yourself:
Do you have a camera, phone, tablet, or laptop you can use to record?
Do you have a set of in-ears or wired headphones that aren’t too troublesome?
Do you have an internet connection?
Space with natural lighting? This is important if you plan to teach a class or record yourself teaching.
These really are the most basic equipment tools you need to start teaching online. Now I’m not touching on lighting or which mat to use for a reason. Think just-the-basics first.
I know you’re wondering, but CJ where the heck do I put the camera while recording?! Well if you’re like most people, you’ve probably sat on Amazon too long searching for the best tripod. Use a stack of books, or a table. Get creative until that tripod arrives (and please make sure it has the right attachment for your phone or tablet so you don’t have to send it back).
Here are my go-to’s that I actually use, and all except one I had pre-pandemic. I realize how strange that sounds writing it out. Buy the fun and pretty things once you feel comfortable spending the money.
